The “Piazzetta”, or small square, is in the centre of Capri. In the past it used to be the place to find the fish and fruit market, but in 1938, when a young islander opened the first bar, it became the centre of Capri’s social life and over the years it has gained the nickname “Salon of the world”.
Considered the eternal guardians of the island, these majestic sea stacks rise up out of the sea and shape the typical landscape of Capri. The first faraglione rock is attached to the coast, the second is characterized by a central cavity, the third hosts the famous blue lizards and the forth has been nicknamed “il Monacone”.
From Marina Piccola’s beach you can see Faraglioni and the “Scoglio delle Sirene”, the rock of the terrible Sirens described in the Odyssey.
Marina Grande is the maritime centre of Capri, the place where all the ships dock.
The Blue Grotto of Capri, Grotta Azzurra in Italian, is one the most famous natural beauties in the world, thanks to the peculiar light effect created by its waters; it can only be visited with small row-boats because the entrance is extremely narrow.
Punta Carena Lighthouse is located on the west side of Capri and it is one of the most famous seaside resorts of the island. Here you can find a large lighthouse, rated the second in Italy for importance and illuminating power.
Anacapri is the historical centre of the island, the ideal place to have a walk through the tranquillity of the silent piazzas and colourful streets, discovering the less glamorous but more authentic area of the island enhanced by the small artisanal shops.
Villa Jovis was the main residence of the Roman emperor Tiberius and was built in the first century A.D. With a surface of 7.000 square meters, the villa overlooks the promontory of Monte Tiberio, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view.
The Gardens of Augustus are located a few steps away from the Piazzetta, next to Via Krupp, a wonderful panoramic street. The landscape you can admire there goes from the bay of Marina Piccola to the Faraglioni.
Situated a few minutes’ walk from the Piazzetta, the Charterhouse of St James is one of the most important historical buildings on the island. In summer it becomes the venue of great events, concerts and open air shows.
Villa San Michele was the house of Axel Munthe. He wanted to build his house in one of the most panoramic spots of Anacapri. Villa San Michele is a museum open to visitors and in the summer it hosts the music festival “Concerti al Tramonto” (Concerts at sunset).
The Arco Naturale is a rock that has acquired a curious arched shape thanks to atmospheric factors. From the square behind it you can enjoy the view of the Sorrentine Peninsula. You can continue your walk down the stairs that will lead you to the panoramic path of Pizzolungo, until you arrive at the wonderful view from the Belvedere di Tragara.
Mount Solaro, is the highest spot of the Island of Capri. You can reach it with the chairlift that will transport you to the wonderful panoramic terraces, from where you can enjoy a view that goes from the Faraglioni to the urban centre of Capri, from the Sorrentine Peninsula to the Gulf of Naples.
Via del Migliera is one of the best panoramic walks in Capri. The street goes through vineyards and cultivated fields and allows you to appreciate a hidden aspect of the island. The landscape at the end of the road on the Belvedere del Tuono, overlooking the Punta Carena Lighthouse, will amaze you.
The Fortini coastal walk is a spectacular path traversing sea landscapes, rocks and Mediterranean scrub and it takes from 3 to 5 hours walking. The path is full of red signs to be followed and of informative signs explaining the flora and fauna of the area.
A boat tour around the island is a must do if you want to enjoy the colours of the sea, the small bays and the wonderful grottos. Discover the most interesting spots of the coast of Capri.
